The Datia Palace, also known as Bir Singh Palace or Bir Singh Dev Palace, is a magnificent monument located approximately 75 km away from the city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, India. This grand palace, which was established in 1614, is unique because it boasts 7 floors and no member of the royal family ever resided in it. Maharaj Birsingh Deo, the founder of the Datia State in Bundelkhand, built this palace along with 52 other monuments across the country.
The Datia Palace, also referred to as Satkhanda Palace, Datia Mahal, and Purana Mahal, is an old palace that was described by historian Abdul Hamid Lahori as a stunning and sturdy structure that was approximately 80 meters long and broad. The palace is a beautiful representation of Mughal and Rajput architecture and took nine years and a cost of 35 Lakh Rupees (equivalent to 78 thousand US dollars) to build. It is situated on an isolated rock on the western side of Datia city and is the largest and most renowned of all the 52 palaces built by Raja Bir Singh Deo. It can be easily spotted from a long distance and is a must-visit for those interested in grand historical monuments.
